Toward a Thai Lexicon of Usership: an invitation to collectively write the art practices that we need into existence.

สู่ปทานุกรมภาษาไทยว่าด้วยความเป็นผู้ใช้งาน: คำเชิญให้เรามาร่วมกันเขียนให้ปฏิบัติการทางศิลปะที่เราต้องการเกิดขึ้นได้จริง

The inappropriate BOOK CLUB would like to invite you to work together on ใช้ได้, a collective writing project aimed at reconceptualizing the Thai art vocabulary. We feel that the current linguistic arsenal to describe, critique, or bring our work into the world delimits what can be perceived as art, what art can be and what art can do. It also forces us to measure and judge our work according to the concepts of the conservative and strongly hierarchical art establishment. Therefore, the goal of this proposed collective exercise is to expand some wiggle room for the discourse on contemporary art and make space for artistic practices that are useful, socially embedded, and politically active.

เรามองว่าศัพท์แสงต่างๆ ที่มีกันอยู่ในปัจจุบัน ที่เราใช้อธิบาย วิพากษ์ หรือใช้เป็นเครื่องมือในการสร้างสรรค์ผลงาน ล้วนแต่เป็นกำแพงที่ขวางไม่ให้เราเห็นความเป็นได้อื่นๆ อะไรบ้างนับเป็นศิลปะ ศิลปะเป็นอะไรได้บ้าง และศิลปะทำอะไรได้บ้าง คำเหล่านี้ยังบังคับให้เราต้องประเมินและตัดสินงานของเราด้วยแนวคิดที่ตั้งต้นมาจากจุดยืนอนุรักษ์นิยม จากสถาบันทางศิลปะที่เต็มไปด้วยการจัดลำดับทางชนชั้น ดังนั้นแล้ว การเขียนร่วมกันที่เราเสนอมานี้จึงมุ่งหมายที่เพิ่มที่หายใจในวาทกรรมว่าด้วยศิลปะร่วมสมัย รวมไปถึงแหวกพื้นที่ให้กับปฏิบัติการทางศิลปะที่มีประโยชน์ใช้สอย ยึดโยงกับสังคม และแข็งขันทางการเมือง

Inspired by Stephen Wright's text "Toward a Lexicon of Usership" – of which we provide a Thai translation – this initiative seeks to collaboratively compile a context-specific lexicon that resonates with and highlights our art community’s capacity to take back control from the state and the market. Wright’s "Toward a Lexicon of Usership" is a critical examination of art terminology used in English, proposing a shift from traditional notions of spectatorship and authorship towards more user-oriented practices. This lexicon challenges the hierarchies and exclusivities inherent in the art world. Rather than a commodity or spectacle, art becomes a tool or a process that can be utilised by a variety of users in various contexts.

แรงบันดาลใจของเรามาจากหนังสือเรื่อง Toward a Lexicon of Usership โดย Stephen Wright ซึ่งเราได้แปลมาเป็นภาษาไทยแล้ว โครงการนี้มุ่งหมายที่จะรวบรวมและสร้างคลังศัพท์ไปด้วยกัน โดยเป็นศัพท์ที่ยึดโยงอยู่กับบริบทที่หลากหลายในสังคมไทย มีความหมายกับแต่ละคน และอาจเป็นอีกหนึ่งช่องทางที่ชี้ให้เห็นศักยภาพของชุมชนศิลปะในการช่วงชิงอำนาจกลับมาจากรัฐและกลไกตลาด หนังสือเล่มนี้ของ Wright คือบทสำรวจและบทวิพากษ์ศัพท์แสงแสลงศิลป์ที่ใช้กันในภาษาอังกฤษ หนังสือเสนอให้เราหันหลังให้กับแนวคิดคร่ำครึที่ติดหล่มความเข้าใจเกี่ยวก้บผู้ชมและความเป็นเจ้าของจากโลกยุคจารีต และหันหน้าสู่ปฏิบัติการต่างๆ ที่ยึดโยงอยู่ก้บความเป็นผู้ใช้งานแทน คลังศัพท์ที่ปรากฎในหนังสือท้าทายระบบชนชั้นและความยกตัวเหนือผู้อื่นอันเป็นคุณลักษณะสำคัญของโลกศิลปะนับแต่ตั้งแต่ยุคก่อต้ัง และชี้ให้เห็นว่าศิลปะไม่จำเป็นต้องเป็นสินค้าหรือสิ่งตระการตา หากแต่เป็นเครื่องมือหรือกระบวนการที่ใครก็ได้สามารถหยิบยกไปใช้ตามแต่บริบท

The reimagining of the Thai art lexicon is not merely an academic exercise but also an act of cultural worldbuilding. By collectively reshaping the language that frames our artistic practices, we are reimagining a less hierarchical and more democratic and decentralised art community in Thailand, beyond both the confines of the state and the interest of capitalism. This evolving vocabulary will hopefully bear political relevance, reflecting our collective wants and needs.

การตามหาคลังศัพท์ศิลปะไทยใหม่ไม่ใด้เป็นแค่กิจกรรมทางวิชาการ แต่ยังหวังให้เกิดการฟูมฟักความเป็นไปได้อื่นๆ ทางวัฒนธรรมอีกด้วย จากความพยายามร่วมกันดัดแปลงภาษาอันเป็นกรอบกำหนดการทำงานศิลปะนี้ เรากำลังร่วมกันจินตนาการถึงชุมชนศิลปะไทยที่ลเจ้ายศเจ้าอย่างน้อยลง เป็นประชาธิปไตยมากขึ้น และไม่กระจุกอยู่ที่ศูนย์กลางอีกต่อไป ไม่ว่าจะในบริบทของรัฐไทยหรือระบบทุน เราหวังว่าคลังศัพท์ที่จะผุดโผล่ขึ้นมาต่อจากนี้จะมีประโยชน์ทางการเมืองอยู่บ้างและสะท้อนความจำเป็นและความต้องการของพวกเราทุกคน

We as initiators claim no ownership of this project. We aim to coalesce artists, curators, critics, writers, cultural workers and anyone else interested in a dialogical process that interrogates and redefines our art terminology. After all, we are all users. Through critical discourse and collective discussions, we will retire obsolete terms that actively keep artistic practices on a leash, as well as forge new ones that reflect our aspirations for less hierarchical, more socially engaged, and politically pertinent practices. The outcome of the process will be combined with the Thai translation of Wright’s original text and self-published by us all.

เราเป็นเพียงแต่ตัวต้นเรื่อง แต่ไม่กล่าวอ้างว่าเป็นเจ้าของงานนี้ เราทำหน้าที่เป็นคนติดต่อศิลปิน ภัณฑารักษ์ นักวิจารณ์ นักเขียน คนทำงานทางวัฒนธรรม และใครก็ตามที่สนใจบทสนทนานี้ เพื่อสร้างพื้นที่ที่เราสามารถมารวมตัวกันเพื่อนิยามคำศัพท์ศิลปะใหม่ไปด้วยกัน ท้ายที่สุดแล้วเราทุกคนก็ล้วนเป็นผู้ใช้งาน มาร่วมวิพากษ์และมีบทสนทนาไปด้วยกันเพื่อละทิ้งคำคร่ำครึที่ควบคุมปฏิบัติการทางศิลปะ และสร้างคำใหม่ที่เอื้อต่อการทำงานที่เสมอภาคมากขึ้น ไม่หนีห่างจากสังคม และมีความสำคัญทางการเมือง ผลลัพธ์ที่ได้จากบทสนทนานี้จะตีพิมพ์เป็นหนังสือร่วมกับบทแปล Toward a Lexicon of Usership โดยพวกเราทุกคนเอง
